Sacandaga Battery Energy Storage Project
Early Development
2 x 5MW
Powering a stronger, more reliable local grid for Northampton
The Sacandaga Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), located in the Town of Northampton, NY, is a proposed energy storage facility designed to support a more stable and reliable local power grid.
Battery storage projects like this help store electricity and deliver it back to the grid when it’s needed most, supporting reliable power for homes and businesses across the region.
This page was created to provide clear information about the project, explain how it works, and give community members a place to learn more and connect with the team behind the project.
For ongoing updates, construction, and safety information, residents can follow the project’s official Facebook page.
Project Overview
Quick Project Facts
Location: 1030 State Highway 30, Northampton, NY.
Capacity: The project’s two, 5MW AC energy storage units are capable of powering thousands of homes during peak demand.
Technology: LFP (Lithium Iron Phosphate) battery storage housed in sealed, self-contained, and monitored units. There is no routine water use, no discharge to soil, and no interaction with groundwater or aquifers.
Why It Matters
The Sacandaga BESS acts like a "bank" for the electric grid. It stores energy during periods of low usage and discharges it back into the local system when demand is highest (such as during heatwaves).
This process:
Strengthens Local Grid Reliability: Reduces the risk of outages and stabilizes local voltage.
Minimizes Infrastructure Impact: Utilizes existing grid capacity to avoid more invasive utility upgrades.
Safety & Environment
We operate under the highest standards of safety and environmental stewardship. The project is designed in full compliance with fire safety standards and includes 24/7 remote monitoring and robust fire safety planning including an Emergency Action Plan.
Our team dedicates an immense amount of time and resources to permit, build, insure, and operate this facility. Our lenders, insurers, and operators all require these safety standards because a fire is not just a safety issue - it is a project-ending event.

Local Benefits
✔ Supporting a Reliable Grid
Battery storage helps keep the energy system steady by storing electricity and delivering it when demand is high, supporting reliable power for homes and businesses across the region.
✔ Helping Keep Energy Costs Stable
When the grid is under pressure, electricity becomes more expensive. Battery storage helps utilities manage those peak moments more efficiently, which can help stabilize energy costs over time.
✔ Low-Impact Land Use
Battery storage facilities have a relatively small footprint and operate quietly once built, making them a low-impact use of land.
✔ A Fully Funded Decommissioning Plan
The project will include a fully funded plan to safely remove the facility and restore the site at the end of its operating life.
✔ Increased Tax Revenue
Projects like this can contribute new property tax revenue that helps support local services such as schools, road maintenance, and emergency response.
✔ A Host Community Agreement with the Town
The project will include a Host Community Agreement directly with the Town, ensuring the community receives direct financial benefits from the project.
